The Vintage Sweater Girl                          by Dianna Prince Hello readers and welcome to my article on vintages sweater girls. Such a classic style and theme. Let's take it back to the beginning. I feel the pinups wearing tight sweaters really became most popular during the 1950's. More so the mid to late 50's. The bullet bra being a major aspect in creating the curves we see, in the sweater girl images. It wasn't invented and then popular until the early 50's. The bullet bra has it's own history, which I will include in this article. Yes, you can create a shape and bring attention to your busy area, using a modern bra. However, the actual shape will not be the same. Under garments for pinup and vintage photo shoots are essential! Even if the under garments are never shown, thru the clothing, or along with the outfit, they play a key role in creating the Vintage Sweater Girl look. One thing I've found over the years of being a pinup stylist, is that most gals do not have the proper under garments, pinup wardrobe staples, to complete the pinup outfits they model in, at photo shoots. They invest in costumes, that are inexpensive, and can only be worn at one shoot, if for publication. Yet, they have low waist panties, no thigh highs, no garter belts, no vintage looking, or true vintage bra's. Non own pantyhose, or fishnet pantyhose. I've seen gals invest money in dresses, outfits, etc., the main garment they want to model in, shoot after shoot, and never buy the essential under garments needed for every shoot! I know of no pinup photographer, or photography studio that loans out under garments. Walmart actually has under garments needed for pinup shoots. EBay is my go - to for everything. I've found bra's, high waist panties, body shapers, waist trainers, girdle type underwear, thigh highs, and bra and panty sets, at Ross and Walmart. Inexpensive, easy to go pick up. EBay has it all, too, very inexpensive. I use the word investment a lot because, weather you're doing pinup shoots to get pampered and dolled up, have fun, and get images, or all the above and want publication, or is an investment. Under garments are a key investment weather you plan to do one shoot a year, or one every month. So the Vintage Sweater Girl,.... Also commonly referred to as, sweater puppets, torpedoes, cones, rockets, fun bags, a rack, and more! Seriously, as far as appealing to men, it's no secret they are obsessed with women’s breasts. Of course not all, but an endless amount. To some people, a tight sweater with a padded bra, or bullet bra, looks ridiculous. I've read a few, but only a select few comments, where people have said that. I think its obviously more so the shape that people either adore or hate, verses just the appearance of large breasts, under a sweater. That's why it's called, the vintage sweater girl look. Its not a popular modern style. You can't achieve it without a bra, or by wearing a modern bra. In the 60's is when more pinups and every day women, went braless and wore tight sweaters. More so in the 70's and 80's. In the 40's and 50's it was all about the bra underneath, that created that defined shape. Here is a brief history of the vintage bullet bra. The most famous bra style in the 1950's was the, now, iconic bullet bra. It had a pointy cup style, seen for more than just comfort and support, it was shaped and was fashionable. There is an under garment called the bustier. It is a combination of the infamous bullet bra, meets the corset. A bullet bustier, as such. I love the shape, material can comfy and firm, or constructing. I adore vintage under garments and vintage lingerie. I've found that most people of today are either shocked to see an image of a vintage, or see a modern starlets in a vintage bullet bra / bustier, or they're thoroughly entertained. Most men always have the funniest, and the most positive comments, when I post those style images. Vintage bras, bustier's and corsets, create that cone appearance. Jayne Mansfield was famous for modeling in them, Marilyn Monroe, Joan Collins, Mamie Van Doren, Sophia Loren, and countless other beautiful starlets wore them, in 50's. It was an extremely popular look, on screen, at photo shoots, or every day wear. Similar to the sexy vintage office girl, look. Covered, but form fitting clothing, and key under garments to pull create that shape can hourglass shape. Thank you to the readers, of this article and fabulous issue. Thank you to the owner of this lovely magazine, and to my awesome photographer David James. Columnist, Vintage Stylist Dianna Prince
