The most popular color in 2018 clothing fashions, may not be gray, but that's the color, and it's many shades, that has been trendy all year for bedrooms.
I have no clue who started this trend. I believe it starts stores putting together colors and patterns, they buyers stocking certain colors. Throughout the year, seasons change, so does what is displayed at stores, and specific colors they have in stock, during that season.
Example would be white, it's not always easy to find a variety of white dresses, blouses, etc., in stores during the winter. During holidays such as Halloween, or Christmas, stores stock and display those holiday items, and clothing with holiday print. This includes bedding and linens.
You aren't expecting to walk into any store, in July and see Christmas print clothing or bedding. There are basic colors of clothing, linens and more, that remain in stores all year long. Gray's, reds, black, blues, etc. So seeing gray bedding isn't uncommon, but it's not always displayed as the main color of a bedroom look. As well as, the variety wasn't as vas, as far as prints and different shades of the color gray.
Once buyers think something will trend, and order a variety, then display it or put it in ads, then the general public, the mainstream sees it 1st hand, and it's available. That continues a trend that maybe wasn't affordable to the mainstream, maybe didn't have as large of a selection, before the buyers saw the trend.
I've looked at bedding pretty much all my life and I never recall the color gray being a main color, with mainly white, off white, cream, black, and silver mixed into the look. I don't recall, those colors, being as popular as they have been in 2018.
I kinda like pink and gray or gray and yellow, pastel bright colors. I do know that fashion trends repeat themselves, in many variations or exactly the same, every 30 years or so. I learned that in school and I've studied the theory. It's true, but of course other unique designs are created, some become popular, some do not.
Think about it though, tight bodysuits are trendy and now, a cross between workout looking wear and 80's bodysuit looks, is very popular. So are the ripped, stone washed jeans, tight fit, old looking. That was popular in the 80's.
I remember in the 80's, probably mid 80s on to the early 90's the color gray, a dull basic gray, medium color, was popular and matched up with red, and pastel colors. Guys in gray suits with a skinny tie, same as now, and same as in the 40's!
I recall many movies and tv shows in the mid 80's and 90's, that had bedroom sets with gray being a main color, mainly teenage boys bedrooms. Stripes, plaids, and many colors of props like a red lamp, red area carpet, red bed frame, red phone. Or all the added details were all yellow, all black, etc. So, the last time I saw the color gray go mainstream, from tv, to celebrities, Instagram models, store displays, ads, and trending the entire year strong, was back in the 80's and early 90's.

Images above, found on Google.
Grays, charcoal gray, steel gray, glittery gray, silver, metallic gray, metal. Those are the popular colors, as a main color base, then incorporated are, lots of creams, off white, white and black. I see so much silver in living rooms, bedrooms and kitchens now, oh and bathrooms.
I think all white was once very popular and mainstream trendy. So many celebrities had all white in rooms, or the main color was white. I believe Kim Kardashian has a mainly white decor to her home, currently.

Because of this fashionable, color trend in home decor, that I love, I'm inspired and motivated to revamp my bedroom. My husband and I are pretty plain and not fussy about fancy furniture. Although, of course I like upscale furniture.
I decided to start off small and think practical. Gray is a versatile color, so if I use it as a main color, a base color, then every season I can incorporate different color extras. Reds in November and December. Pinks and rose color pink in February. Yellows and white, during the summer. Maybe for Spring, pastel purple, green and light blue. Autumn, brown, tan, cream and orange.
Considering my budget and the staples I'll need, and later invest in and incorporate different color sheets, pillow cases, curtains, rugs, etc., I ordered a few basic pieces. White, is also an extremely versatile base, to add any color to, as well as black. I also considered what main pieces we already own, like a black comforter, a velvet cranberry color blanket, a plaid sheet set, black sheets set, cranberry color sheet set and the color curtains I have already.
My budget was $200, with a vintage headboard, photography backdrop, I just barely went over 200. So, my research, comparison shopping, and staying within my budget, pretty much worked. Interior design is definitely a reflection of personal taste, as well as individual budget.
I don't buy things I dislike just because I couldn't afford, things I really like. I'd rather save up, or create new looks with things I already own. The higher the quality of the material, the more expensive it will be, if there's a name brand, it'll cost more. I adore things like comforters, that cost 1k, and I adore comforters that cost 20 bucks.
I'm very excited to begin and I must start with the elimination of a few things. Until items begin to arrive this week, I can get rid of things, rearrange a bit, and hang up curtains. Since my main color is gray, black, or white, I can hang up curtains in those colors asap. Getting rid of a love seat, that's basically our dresser. Our clean under clothes, and lounging clothes are placed there. And lots of my husbands lounging clothes are on a chair. I want them both out, and giving away the love seat.
I ordered a big footlocker that will take up way less space, clothes won't be out, and it looks nice. Once a new season arrives, I'll incorporate color to the base of gray or white. Bellow are a few items I recently ordered, to revamp our master bedroom.
Few sheet sets, 2 comforters, a bed skirt, 2 colors and 2 different size blankets, the footlocker and backdrop. Once we move into our 1st home, I plan on buying a bedroom set me and my husband both love, and is versatile.

Look for my blog on our bedrooms new look, soon!
